Sacramento County deputies are probing a shooting that broke out late Saturday at Howe Community Park at the time deputies were clearing a large unsanctioned party of several hundred people.
Background
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were first dispatched to the Arden-Arcade park at about 6:30 PM on April 18 after obtaining information of individuals who may have had concealed firearms. Following that, additional information came in about a possible physical fight breaking out near the park.
A law enforcement helicopter flew over the park but could not confirm any ongoing fight. Nevertheless, it became clear that a crowd of several hundred had assembled at the park without authorization.
The Dispersal and Shooting
Law enforcement personnel moved to clear the area by encircling the gathering and announcing over their public address systems telling those gathered to vacate the area. Roughly 15 minutes were given for individuals to vacate.
As the crowd was being cleared that between 20 and 25 rounds cut through the air. The rapid succession of shots sent hundreds fleeing. Officers swiftly started locating gunshot victims.
The Shooting Victims
Altogether, four people were found to have been shot. The shooting victims — comprising three men and one woman each apparently in their 20s — were brought to local Sacramento hospitals. Doctors and nurses indicated that two victims sustained immediate injuries, one victim's injuries were classified as moderate, and one suffered minor injuries. In a positive development, all four victims survived and were stable.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department assisted at the location and aided in treating those who had been shot before they were taken to the hospital.
Physical Evidence
The center of the incident seemed to have been concentrated near Cottage Way next to the Home Depot store situated at the 2200 block of Howe Ave. CSI personnel discovered extra shell casings along Cottage Way. Bullet holes were observed in the metal fencing near the nearby Home Depot. These discoveries pointed to that at least one of the shooters had been shooting in a southerly direction from along Cottage Way in the direction check here of the Home Depot store. The store itself was secured under a brief lockdown during the incident. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives remained on scene through the early morning hours.
Suspect Information
Details gathered through law enforcement radio communications showed that a vehicle identified as a Kia was contacted by law enforcement in an area within Solano County. Four individuals were held for questioning. Sacramento law enforcement were sent to retrieve the detainees to pick up those detained for processing in Sacramento County. Footage analyzed by investigators established that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
